Closed: 1968 · This opened in the later 1920?s. It had a proper balcony and separate foyer, with a total of 1200 seats. The cinema side was equipped with Kalee 19?s and Westrex sound system, and was also fully equipped for theatre use.
Entry to the projection room was via the back row of the balcony through a door on the left side (facing screen). The projection room was small and cramped, as it also contained lighting for theatre productions.
Closed in late 60?s as cinema due to lack of patronage, the stalls were cleared and refitted with tables and chairs to become bingo hall in 1970.
The balcony and projection room remained ?as was? when the place was converted, but the stage had been totally redone for bingo.

Kine Year book lists under "Newton" and gives address as "Hallside" but Westburn, Newton and Hallside are all separate if nearby villages which had their own Miner's Institutes so could have been operated in one of those. An extant building in Westburn currently operating as a kitchen showroom was reputedly a cinema. Prior to kitchen showroom, it had been an electrical goods factory and a metal fabrication workshop. Brick exterior now clad in metal, supposedly the prices for admission were at one point carved into the brick.

The Town Hall in Cullen (Banffshire) operated as a cinema during WW2 if not during the 30s as well. During one of these performances in 1942 the projection box caught fire (acetylene + nitrate film?) and the place was severelly damaged by the enxuing blaze. It was rebuilt in the 1950s much as before but with a lower ceiling and (wow!) electric light! This building still has a projection box it is not known if any equipment remains.

368s. Structure was originally a Nissen hut which was first used as an entertainment centre during WW2. The frontage where the box office projection room and managers office was added in the late 1940's. The frontage was in the style of a Dutch building just about twenty feet high from pavement to roof level. There were three rounded steps leading to the front doors. The doors were of heavy oak with heavy glass. Access to the projection room was by a ladder on the north side of the frontage. Inside the managers office was to the right with a kiosk on the left. The paybox was between the two doors leading into the Hall. The cinema had stalls and balcony seating; "balcony" was in fact a raised bleacher of twelve rows of better quality seating than the stalls and affording a better view of the single screen. The stalls were flat floored - the seats were taken up for weekend dancing during the War when the building was essentially a NAAFI. The Hall was about 120 feet long so it was not a big cinema. The screen was covered by large purple velvet curtaining to the left was a Railway Clock somewhat obscured by a false Palm Tree, there was another tree on the right with an exit door adjacent. - Daniel Fernie · Status: Storeroom

The building was reopened in 1917 as Dundas Hall and used for various entertainment, as the Temperance hall had closed in 1912. Dundas Hall closed its doors for good in 1937 after the dance crazed years of the 20?s and 30?s the building was once again refurbished.Rebuilt with a complete new fa?ade was converted to cinema
Its 200-seat capacity was just about right for the town. The Regal Stood next to the Co-op in Main Street not that far away from the other cinema The Picture House.
It only was open as a cinema for a short time when in early 1939 it went up in flames. (Smouldering Nitrate film???) Although the building was totally gutted in the fire it was completely repaired and reopened later in 1939. A ?talkie? cinema from opening till the end and with Cinemascope added in its twilight years.
The REGAL remained in service until 1961 when it too succumbs to falling audiences. Sadly, and again in 1972, the building was demolished the site it stood on is now the co-op car park.
